Bihar Institute of Economic Studies (BIES) was established in the year 1990 by a group of eminent economists and academicians, having expertise and rich experience in their respective fields. It is a non-profit organization registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 with the Government of Bihar, Registration No. 407/89-90 dated 25.01.1990 and also under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) with Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, Registration No. 031170144, dated 25.09.1998. BIES is also an approved institution u/s 12(A) of Income Tax Act.
BIES conducts Social Science Research, Evaluation, provides Consultancy on Developmental Issues, Design and Implement developmental activities and Organizes Seminars/Workshop on Socio-economic issues including training of different stakeholders. Its area of operation is all over India particularly Bihar & Jharkhand.
Over the past twenty eight years, BIES has successfully completed several projects on Health, Population, Rural Development, Watershed & Tribal Development. BIES has also conducted Workshop on Social Defence, Panchayati Raj and Economic Development. BIES has in the past, received grant in aid from several Ministries of the Government of India including the Planning Commission, Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, CAPART, Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices, Govt. of India, Govt. of Jharkhand and Govt. of Bihar.
The Institute has a spacious accommodation in the heart of Patna having a floor area of about 3250 sq. feet. It has a state of the art infrastructure required for the implementation of various projects, evaluation and academic activities. The infrastructure comprises of a information center having more than five hundred reference books and journals, a conference hall (seating capacity of fifty persons) with audio – video facilities, and a well developed computer center.
The Institute is headed by a Director and assisted by an Assistant Director, a Research Officer, a Research Associate and an Administrative Officer-Cum-Finance officer. Several Investigators and Research-fellows having rich experience and expertise in their relative fields support them. Besides, BIES is also supported by a panel of Consultants.
